Earth Day celebrations and living green year-round

Earth Day is almost here! In honor of this important day, we’d like to take the opportunity to highlight the things we do in our homes and community to support the core principles of sustainability that serve as the foundation of Briar Chapel.

Eco-friendly community

When designing the community, we considered the land and preserved species-rich areas, such as wetlands, parks, greenways and 900 acres of existing trees, to conserve water quality and plants. We advocated for more trees and implemented stormwater retention ponds with native grasses and perennials to provide habitat for wildlife and filtration for pollutants in the water.

Our community is also designed to embrace walkability, with more than 20 miles of trails connecting neighborhoods and blending acres of parks.

Sustainable home design

At Briar Chapel, we have a commitment to building green. Our homes are nestled into the natural topography and designed to manage moisture, improve indoor air quality, reduce maintenance, promote water conservation and increase solar capabilities.

Our homes have an average annual energy savings of 853 kilowatt hours of electricity, or $621, versus other N.C. homes. That’s equivalent to the cost of 70 burgers from Town Hall or the carbon from 4,200 vehicle miles.

Savings of a lifetime

Over the lifetime of the community, we have saved a total of 64 million kilowatt hours of electricity, or $9.1 million, versus average existing N.C. homes. That’s equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 1.6 million trees planted, the cost of 537,000 pizzas from Capps or the carbon from 7 million gallons of gasoline.

We have also avoided 136 million pounds of carbon emissions, earned a lifetime average HERS Score of 60.2, installed 88 solar systems and reached 20 homes in the community with net-zero electric bills.

Celebrating Earth Day at Briar Chapel

This year, we celebrated Earth Day with our residents with a trail clean-up and a planter event. At the event, residents were invited to make their own Earth Day planter with Myatt Landscaping.
