Briar Chapel Q1 2023 sustainability update!
At Briar Chapel, living green is at the foundation of our community. When designing the community, we protected species-rich areas and preserved almost 900 acres of land by nestling homes into the existing topography.
Our homes are designed with the environment in mind and include features that manage moisture, improve indoor air quality, reduce maintenance, promote water conservation and increase solar capabilities, which result in homes that are 25% more efficient than the average North Carolina home.
Did you know that our commitment to sustainability also provides savings for our residents? Keep reading to see the key insights from our most recent sustainability report from Southern Energy Management.
Lifetime savings
As of now, we have a cumulative energy savings over the lifetime of the community of $9.4 million, or 66 million kilowatt hours of electricity saved. To put it into perspective, that’s equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 1.6 million trees planted, the cost of 552,000 pizzas from Capp’s or the carbon from 7.2 million gallons of gasoline.
Over the lifetime of the community, we have also:
- Avoided 140 million pounds of carbon emissions
- Achieved a lifetime average HERS score of 60.2
- Installed 88 solar systems
- Established 10 homes in the community with net-zero electric bills
Annual savings
So far this year, we have an average annual home energy savings of $621, or 848 kilowatt hours of electricity saved. That’s equivalent to the carbon from 4,100 vehicle miles not driven, the cost of 26 concerts at Cat’s Cradle or the cost of 70 burgers from Town Hall. We have also avoided 3,800 pounds of carbon emissions this year alone.
