Briar Chapel & TORC Celebrate National Trail Day

The Triangle Off Road Cyclists (TORC) spent 2009 National Trails Day, June 6th at Briar Chapel. About 30 members met for a productive day of trail building, riding and a barbecue.

The TORC is a volunteer organization dedicated to ensuring the future of mountain biking in the Raleigh/Durham area.

TORC has had a deep involvement with Briar Chapel since 2006. It was in late fall 2006 when TORC began work building about 20 miles of 18-inch-wide single-track mountain bike trails in and around Briar Chapel. Using trail making equipment, the trails were tailored to fit the topographical contours of the land, featuring berms, switchbacks and uphill turns, all designed with great care to limit erosion and the impact to the environment.

For 2009 National Trails Day, TORC started work on the "School" section of a new trail. They also helped clear brush and some hand finishing of a trail tread.

After a long day working on the trails, the crew put away the tools and went for a group ride on Briar Chapel's trails. The day ended with a barbecue courtesy of Briar Chapel's developer, Newland Communities, and a dip in Briar Chapel's new swimming pool.

A map of all of the trails completed at Briar Chapel is available at the community's Information Center, or contact us at (888) 249-9429.
