Growing with the Green Thumb Club
Friday, July 18, 2014
While driving around Briar Chapel the other morning, I was taken aback by how much our community gardens were thriving. The tomato plants were at least 5 feet tall, and all sorts of lettuce and kale outlined the garden in Boulder Park, looking greener than ever. I knew right then that I had to meet our Green Thumb Club, the residents in Briar Chapel that grow fresh food and keep our gardens looking beautiful season after season.
The Green Thumb Club was established to bring together gardeners and aspiring gardeners to educate others about sustainability, and share a love of fresh, home-grown food. Resident Judy Benson has been a member of the club since the very beginning, and she says that one reason she enjoys coming is to meet new friends and socialize with her Briar Chapel neighbors. The group decides together what they want to plant and this year there is an abundance of okra, peppers, black eyed peas, sweet potatoes, cucumbers and many other ingredients that the members harvest and cook dinner with. They also grow a wide range of flowers and herbs!
The Green Thumb Club also introduced a medicinal garden this year, spearheaded by Biologist Valerie Vickers. The two beds host a range of plants and herbs that are said to have healing properties. Lavender was planted for its calming effects, and there’s even Elderberry, which can be used for allergy relief and cold remedies. Other plants in the medicinal garden include Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Sage, Lemon Balm, and Peppermint.
Briar Chapel has two community gardens, the Briar Patch and Boulder Park Garden. Have you been by them recently? What did you think?
